Evaluations

Overview:

The right of individuals to access information held by the government or public authorities, commonly referred to as the right to information (RTI), is recognised under both international law and the Sri Lankan Constitution as a human right. Sri Lanka’s Right to Information Act, which dates from 2016, is among the strongest RTI laws in the world according to the RTI Rating (rti-rating.org). However, having a strong law does not ensure proper implementation.
Overall, Sri Lanka achieved a mediocre grade.
Sri Lanka obtained mediocre grades in each assessment area, except proactive disclosure, which received a poor score, albeit at .31 this was close to a mediocre grade. The strongest of the mediocre grades was for the Central Measures assessment area.
